Anyone who's tried to Autosurface scan data into a Step or Parasolid file realized that the resultant model didn't contain analytic shapes. So if your only concern was to do surface machining, those results weren't terrible. But how about when you need to perform 2-axis pocketing, profiling or drilling and are looking for usable features in the Step file.
